Five observations: James Wiseman shines, Warriors enjoy preseason opener in Japan

SAITAMA, Japan — The Warriors only had three training camp practices before a 10-hour flight across the Pacific Ocean. Their preseason opener tipped off while their adjusting body clocks still told them it was 3 a.m. This is a lucrative trip to Japan, with tourist benefits, but doesn’t cultivate the ideal developmental environment in the earliest days of an NBA calendar.

In response, the Warriors opted to rest Klay Thompson out of precaution and then watched Steph Curry, Jordan Poole and Andrew Wiggins shoot a combined 3-of-24 in a rusty 41-point first half against the Wizards. Still, though, there were several leftover storylines with some meaning — from the performances down the roster to the responsive, friendly Japanese crowd.

1. James Wiseman’s reappearance

Steve Kerr will spend the first month, at least, toggling with all sorts of lineup combinations to figure out how best to mix and match beyond his established starters. In the preseason opener, that meant a Curry/Moses Moody/Jonathan Kuminga/Draymond Green/James Wiseman group to open the second quarter, pairing three recent lottery picks with two franchise legends.

In their opening moments together, both Green and Curry found Wiseman for a bucket at the rim.
