In a rare Oval Office speech, President Biden sought to convince Congress and Americans that Washington must maintain support for both Israel and Ukraine, describing cash spent on the two nations as “a smart investment that’s going to pay dividends for American security for generations.” Biden made the case for billions in aid as the administration prepared to submit an urgent budget request to Congress to assist both U.S. allies. In Gaza, the historic Church of St. Porphyrius was struck as it sheltered hundreds of Palestinians displaced by the war, according to religious officials. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem blamed Israel for Thursday’s strike on the church, where rescuers were still digging through the rubble early Friday. Israel said a strike on a Hamas target in the area “damaged the wall of a church,” and said it was “aware of reports on casualties.”
