New Taoiseach Simon Harris is to visit Ukraine, at a date to be decided.

Mr Harris accepted an invitation to Kyiv in a call with President Volodomyr Zelenskiyy yesterday.

Officials said the acceptance meant there would have to be careful planning for the visit, which did not mean it was imminent.

Western politicians visiting Kyiv have typically gone by train from the western border with Poland, but some have driven in convoy.

Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has visited Ukraine, with separate trips there by Foreign Minister Micheál Martin and Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghail.

“President Zelenskiyy extended the invitation, which the Taoiseach was pleased to accept,” a senior source said.

“There is no date for the trip yet, and no detail.”

It is expected Mr Harris will tour areas of Kyiv and will lay a wreath at the martyr’s monument to honour the heroes killed after the Russian invasion in February 2022.

It is possible he may also make the relatively short trip to Bucha in the north, one of the earliest places where Russian soldiers carried out a litany of war crimes, which have continued since.
