Oahu’s Moore, Florence provisionally qualify for 2024 Paris Olympics

Five-time WSL champion Carissa Moore surfs during the elimination round of the Shiseido Tahiti Pro on Friday at Teahupoʻo, Tahiti, French Polynesia. Moore and fellow Oahu surfer John John Florence both provisionally qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics with their performances on Day 1 of the World Surf League Championship Tour event; Moore, who won gold for the United States at the inaugural Olympic surf competition in 2021 in Tokyo, won her elimination heat, while Florence won his opening-round heat to advance straight through to the round of 16. Surf competition for the 2024 Games will also be at Teahupo’o. Meanwhile, Maui’s Ian Gentil was sent to the elimination round with a third-place finish in his opening-round heat.
