Sky Sports secures UK broadcast rights to 2025 Lions tour of Australia – SportsPro

Sky Sports has secured the UK and Ireland broadcast rights to the British and Irish Lions Tour of Australia in 2025.

Contract:

  • Sky Sports will broadcast all three Test matches against Australia
  • Pay-TV broadcaster  alstoo air the Lion’s six warm-up games against local and invitational sides
  • Coverage will be also be streamed via the Now direct-to-consumer (DTC) service

Context:

The British and Irish Lions are one of rugby union’s most valued traditions, with a team comprising English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh players touring Australia, New Zealand or South Africa every four years. Sky Sports has been the UK broadcaster for the past seven Lions tours, starting with the team’s iconic victory in South Africa in 1997.

Sky Sports has largely retreated from rugby union in recent years – southern hemisphere competitions aside – but the Lions have remained one of its tentpole events. The month-long tour could also drive subscriptions to Now, which offers short-term price plans.

Comment:

“With all its history, the Lions Tour remains one of the most iconic events in the sporting calendar and one we always look forward to at Sky Sports,” said Jonathan Licht, Sky Sports managing director. “We’re committed to delivering world-class coverage of what is sure to be another fantastic series.”

“We are delighted to be partnering once again with Sky Sports as our UK and Ireland live broadcast partner for the 2025 Tour,” added Ben Calveley, British and Irish Lions chief executive.

“Sky Sports have been an outstanding broadcast partner to the British and Irish Lions for many years. The quality of production, presenters, expert panellists, and overall analysis they deliver really enriches the series and makes for a compelling offering for fans watching at home.

“Preparations are really starting to ramp up for 2025 and we are hugely excited for the tour. Sky Sports will play a key role in helping to further build levels of excitement and anticipation amongst fans and we look forward to working closely with them over the coming period.”
