16-vehicle pileup on Hwy. 404 in Aurora due to icy roads

Icy and slick road conditions resulted in a series of crashes involving 16 vehicles on Highway 404 in Aurora, forcing a portion of the highway to close at one point on Friday morning.

The northbound lanes of Hwy. 404 were closed from Bloomington Road to Aurora Road, as well as the southbound stretch between Wellington Street and Bloomington Road. The area has since reopened to traffic.

A spokesperson with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) tells CityNews that 16 vehicles were involved. Seven cars were travelling in northbound lanes and nine other vehicles were travelling in southbound lanes.

Two adults were transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

Crews worked to clear the vehicles and salt down the affected lanes before the highway reopened.
