D.C.-area forecast: Clearing and blustery in the wake of overnight snow

A somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

8/10: I could go for less in the way of wind but a weekend day with fresh snow is always a win.

Today: Morning snowflake possible. Clearing, gusty. Highs: Near 40.
Tonight: Mainly clear and cold. Lows: Upper teens to mid-20s.
Tomorrow: Mostly sunny, breezy. Highs: Mid-40s to near 50.

The overnight quick-hitting snow moves off to the east as fast as it arrived. Some snow showers may dot the area into the couple hours after sunrise. Although temperatures are on the chilly side today, we’re on the precipice of when the increasing sun angle does a pretty good job of devouring snow. In other words, don’t plan on it lasting in areas where it’s on the ground. Relatively tranquil conditions are the rule in days ahead.

Today (Saturday): Breaks in the clouds behind the overnight snow become more numerous. Some snow showers or flurries might remain around through 8 or 9 a.m. Otherwise, stories of the day include gusty winds — plus a lot of sledding. Highs should rise to within a few degrees of 40. Winds blow from the north and northwest around 10 to 20 mph, with gusts to 30 or 35 mph. Confidence: Medium-High

Tonight: Winds diminish, and skies remain largely clear. Add in the snow. It’s somewhat diminished, but still covering most of the area and it’ll be a cold night. Lows range from the upper teens to the mid-20s. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow (Sunday): We continue with a good deal of sunshine through the day. Snowmelt should be fairly rapid as highs reach the mid-40s to near 50. Winds are a bit gusty, again, but this time from the southwest. Some gusts around 20 or 25 mph are possible. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: It should remain clearer than not. Lows make the 20s in the coldest spots to perhaps around freezing downtown. Confidence: Medium-High

Pretty decent for Presidents’ Day on Monday. Sunshine dominates and temperatures head for the upper 40s to near 50. Similar Tuesday, but perhaps a few degrees warmer and maybe some more clouds floating by overhead. Confidence: Medium

A daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week, on a 0-10 scale.

1/10: Quieter into next week. There could be a vigorous storm around Friday that looks a bit mild for much snow yet worth monitoring.
