Drug driver crash blocks M25 clockwise carriageway causing long delays


There was a crash on London’s major motorway, causing long delays to build up this morning (Friday, December 29). The M25 in the clockwise direction was closed due to an accident in Kent at Junction 5, which connects the busy motorway to the M26.

This was confirmed by National Highways, who posted on X shortly before 6am: “The #M25 is CLOSED clockwise within J5 near #Sevenoaks due to a collision. Traffic is being diverted onto the #A21 southbound towards #Chipstead




“We are assisting emergency services at the scene. Please plan ahead and allow extra journey time this morning #Kent”.


North Kent Police said the crash was caused by a drug driver who crashed into a barrier on the clockwise carriageway near Junction 5 of the M25. In a statement, they said: “At around 3.20am on Friday 29 December 2023, officers were on patrol went they required a motorist travelling on the clockwise carriageway towards the A21 to stop.

“The vehicle did not stop and subsequently collided with a barrier near junction 5. No injuries were reported and a man was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified and driving whilst unfit through drugs.”

Live blog closed

A crash on the M25 at Junction 5 was caused by a drug driver who collided with the central barrier on the clockwise carriageway.

This caused damage to the barrier and traffic was held while repairs took place.

The road has been reopened and traffic returned to normal.

Incident cleared

The incident has now been cleared and traffic is passing normally on the M25 at Junction 5.

The clockwise carriageway was closed while emergency barrier repairs were carried out.

Drug driver crashed into barriers, say police

North Kent Police have issued a statement regarding this morning’s crash on the M25.

They say: “Patrols are at the scene of a one-vehicle collision on the M25 near Sevenoaks. At around 3.20am on Friday 29 December 2023, officers were on patrol went they required a motorist travelling on the clockwise carriageway towards the A21 to stop.

“The vehicle did not stop and subsequently collided with a barrier near junction 5. No injuries were reported and a man was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified and driving whilst unfit through drugs.

“The clockwise carriageway at junction 5 is currently closed and traffic is being diverted by highways officers onto the A21 while repairs are completed.”

Delays easing

Delays are easing on the M25 in Kent this morning, according to the AA’s live traffic map.

There are reportedly some delays leading up to the road closure, with some additional delays on the A21 at Sevenoaks bypass.

Emergency repairs

Emergency repairs are now being carried out, according to traffic monitoring system InRix.

Traffic is queueing after a temporary hold.
