Gujarat rains: Over 10k people evacuated after heavy rain triggers flooding in Gujarat

Heavy rain, combined with the release of water from major dams including Sardar Sarovar, Ukai, and Kadana, wreaked havoc on several parts of Gujarat, particularly in the southern and central regions of the state on Sunday, prompting the evacuation of nearly 10,000 people to safety in five districts.More than 200 individuals had to be rescued as they found themselves stranded due to the heavy waterlogging and flood-like conditions. In the worst-hit districts of Bharuch, Narmada, and Vadodara, numerous villages grappled with flooding in low-lying areas, leaving several communities cut off.In Ahmedabad, relentless rain disrupted daily life as residents refrained from venturing out due to waterlogged roads. Towards the evening, the city also witnessed thunderstorms and intermittent heavy rainfall, with Ahmedabad recording 84mm of rainfall by 8 pm on Sunday.Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel conducted an aerial survey of the district to assess the situation, and fortunately, no casualties were reported.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for several districts including Panchmahal, Dahod, Kheda, Aravalli, Mahisagar, Banaskantha, and Sabarkantha, predicting isolated extremely heavy rainfall until Tuesday morning. Taiwan’s defence ministry said on Monday it had detected 103 Chinese warplanes around the island in one day, describing the number as a “recent high”. “Between the morning of September 17th to 18th, the Ministry of National Defence had detected a total of 103 Chinese aircraft which was a recent high and has posed severe challenges to the security across the Taiwan Strait and in the region,” it said in a statement. Beijing’s “continued military harassment can easily lead to a sharp spike in tension and worsen regional security,” the ministry said, as it called on China to “immediately stop such destructive unilateral actions.”
