Japan’s Princess Kako visits Corfu’s Old Town on official trip to Greece | NHK WORLD-JAPAN

Japan’s Princess Kako has visited the World Heritage site of the Old Town of Corfu as part of her official trip to Greece.

Princess Kako, the second daughter of Crown Prince and Princess Akishino, arrived on the island of Corfu on Wednesday afternoon. The landscape of the Old Town shows the influence of Western European styles. Corfu was under Venetian rule for about 400 years until the 18th century. The island was also under French and British control.

Princess Kako was accompanied by the Greek tourism minister and the Corfu mayor as she walked around the area.

She told reporters that the places she has visited are all very attractive and she is grateful for the warm welcome.

Tourists cheered as Princess Kako smiled and waved.

Japan and Greece will mark the 125th anniversary of bilateral relations next month, and 2024 is also the “Year of Culture and Tourism” between the two countries.

Princess Kako is attending an official event at an art museum on Thursday to commemorate the anniversary.
