Dinesh Karthik, during a pre-match chat, asked R Ashwin if he thought he’d be chosen for the World Cup if DK said so to him three months ago. “I would’ve said, ‘You’re joking!’ Life is full of surprises, I honestly wasn’t thinking I’d be here,” Ashwin said while thanking the management for showing trust in him.

Ashwin added that his strength would be to move the ball both ways. “This could be my last World Cup,” he chuckled while saying.

“To be in India ahead of what’s gonna be a really exciting World Cup, for us it is very much about getting out there and getting moving. We had a long travel to get there. We will be a bit cautious today,” Jos Buttler said at the toss.

“There is a lot of experience in our game, everything including this game is about preparing for that (World Cup opening) match. We have plenty of guys who played a lot of IPL cricket here in India and really excited about today. All the players are fit and ready to go,” he added.

Dravid is, nevertheless, happy with how they have played. This has made our team stronger. “For all those guys, game-time was important. The fact that they have been able to get that is, I think, something that we are much better off for it,” Dravid earlier said.

Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are both good choices for the warm-up game against England. Lately, Kishan has played regularly, filling in for injured players like Iyer and KL Rahul. But Iyer is also doing well in batting and could help the team.

Iyer recently scored a century in a game against Australia. He did this after taking six months off due to injuries. People were wondering if he would still play well, and it looks like he can.

India and England have faced off eight times in the history of the ICC World Cups. England won four times, India secured three wins, and one game ended in a tie. The latest face-off in an ODI World Cup took place in 2019, where England won by 31 runs. Rohit Sharma scored a century, and Virat Kohli made 66 runs, leading India to a score of 306 in 50 overs. 

Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to beat England’s impressive 337, boosted by Jonny Bairstow’s stunning 111 off 109 balls and Jason Roy’s 66 off 57. Mohammed Shami made a notable impact, taking five wickets for 69 runs in his 10 overs.

Ravichandran Ashwin replaced Axar Patel in Team India’s final ICC World Cup 2023 squad. Axar Patel, injured during the Asia Cup 2023, is out of the World Cup. He also missed the India-Australia series. Ravichandran Ashwin impressed during that series.

Ashwin, 37, adds variety to India’s bowling lineup. The team lacked an off-spinner. His inclusion makes him the only player, besides Virat Kohli, from India’s 2011 World Cup journey.

At the ICC World Cup 2023, India stand out as the only team with a player in the top 10 of every ranking category. Mohammed Siraj, recently crowned as the No.1 ranked bowler, takes the lead after his remarkable performance in the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka earlier in September.

Siraj’s outstanding performance pushed him ahead of Australia’s bowler Josh Hazlewood, securing the top spot in the ODI bowlers’ rankings. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is just 10 rating points away from becoming the No.1 ranked batter, currently held by Pakistan’s Babar Azam. Adding to India’s strength, the experienced all-rounder Hardik Pandya (7) also ranks within the top 10 in the all-rounder category.

England’s most reliable batter, Dawid Malan, holds the top ranking (14), with skipper Jos Buttler closely trailing at #17. In the bowling and all-rounder categories, the dependable pace bowler Chris Woakes (12) boasts the highest rankings. This achievement comes as no surprise, considering Woakes played a pivotal role in England’s victory in the last World Cup, securing 16 wickets during the 2019 event. He is also the highest-ranked all-rounder (11) in the team.

Ten teams are scheduled to engage in two warm-up matches each before the ICC World Cup 2023 starts on October 5. India’s initial fixture will be against reigning champions England at the Barsapara Stadium. Next, they will journey to Thiruvananthapuram for their second encounter, slated for October 2, against the Netherlands. 

On September 30, another warm-up match is set to take place. The match between Australia and the Netherlands will be held at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
