NOPD Investigating Traffic Fatality in Third District

The New Orleans Police Department’s Fatality Unit is investigating a traffic accident that left a 38-year-old man dead.  The accident occurred around 7:30 p.m. this evening (April 18, 2023) on Airline Drive at Monroe Street in the Third District.

According to investigators, a male driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on Airline Drive when the vehicle crossed the concrete median into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons and struck another vehicle head on.  That vehicle had been headed west on Airline Drive and was also struck from behind by another vehicle headed in the same direction.

All three drivers were taken to the hospital for treatment.  The driver of the Toyota Camry was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival at the hospital.  The other two drivers are reportedly in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing. The Orleans Parish Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.  The victim’s name is being withheld until notification of family.

The lead investigator is Detective Danny Ellis.
