Japan’s Nikkei ends lower as chip shares fall amid rising US yields

Japan’s Nikkei share average ended more than 1% lower on Tuesday, dragged by declines in heavyweight chip-related shares, but losses were limited as investors bought value stocks for dividend payout rights.

The Nikkei index closed down 1.11% at 32,315.05.

“Growth shares weakened amid concern about rising U.S. Treasury yields,” said Takehiko Masuzawa, trading head at Phillip Securities Japan.

Rupee weakens tracking Asian peers; key support looms

The Indian rupee weakened on Tuesday, tracking Asian peers, while elevated U.S. Treasury yields also weighed on the local unit, which neared key support levels.

The rupee was at 83.2250 against the U.S. dollar as of 10:55 a.m. IST, compared with 83.1450 in the previous session.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield rose to 4.56% in Asian hours, its highest level since October 2007. The dollar index was hovering close to its highest level since November 2022 and was last quoted at 106.05.

India bond yields rise, as spike in Treasury yields hurts appetite

Indian government bond yields rose in the early session on Tuesday as U.S. Treasury yields scaled fresh highs, damping the appetite for local papers ahead of debt sales in a holiday-truncated week.

The 10-year benchmark 7.18% 2033 bond yield was at 7.1698% as of 10:00 a.m. IST, after ending at 7.1541% in the previous session.

“Though, the Indian yields will not react at par with the spike in U.S. peers, this is a major factor that is supporting the bears currently,” a trader with a private bank said.

There are two forces influencing the market trend now. On the positive side, the strength of the Indian economy, good corporate earnings trend and flows into the mutual funds, particularly SIPs, are supportive indicators. But the bulls are on the back foot since negative global cues are indicating caution. The US 10-year bond yield climbing to a 10-month high of 4.54 % and the dollar index spiking to 105.94 are headwinds for the market. This is getting reflected in the sustained FII selling which has taken the net FII sell figure in September, so far, to Rs 20593 crores. The buying by DIIs, at Rs 13748 crores, is supporting the market but is not strong enough to give confidence to the bulls. It remains to be seen how this tug of war plays out in the near-term.

Meanwhile, long-term investors can utilise the weakness in the market as an opportunity to buy high quality stocks in financials, capital goods and autos ignoring the near-term volatility in the market.
