UPDATE: Portions of midwestern Ontario face snow squalls, travel advisory

It could be a snowy start to the Family Day weekend.

Environment Canada issued a winter weather travel advisory for people in Grey-Bruce and Huron-Perth on Friday night.

On Saturday morning, residents in Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Southern Bruce County and those in Huron County saw that travel advisory upgraded to a snow squall warning.

Forecasters are calling for heavy lake effect flurries and strong winds.

Saturday morning’s snow squalls are expected to taper off in the afternoon, before redeveloping overnight and into Sunday.

“Strong westerly winds gusting up to 70 km/h are also expected tonight into Sunday which will lead to significantly reduced visibility in blowing snow,” said Environment Canada.

Snowfall accumulations were expected to reach five centimetres on Friday night, with another five to ten centimetres on Saturday.

Travel may become hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather, and reduced visibility is possible in heavy snow.

The weather agency advises that if visibility is reduced while driving to slow down, watch for tail lights ahead, and be prepared to stop.
