US Congress to not pass government’s new aid package for Ukraine this year | NHK

The US Democratic and Republican Senate leaders say the chamber cannot approve the government’s new funding to continue military aid for Ukraine by the year-end as differences remain between the parties.

The leaders issued a joint statement on Tuesday. It says, “As negotiators work through remaining issues, it is our hope that their efforts will allow the Senate to take swift action on the national security supplemental early in the new year.”

Republicans say the government’s Ukraine aid package should come with stepped-up immigration control measures of the border with Mexico.

Democrats and Republicans have been continuing talks but have yet to reach an agreement.

A senior government official has said there will be aid for Ukraine once more this year, but it will be unable to provide further support unless Congress approves the new package.
