Your SoCal Weather Report For Wednesday, May 22: Patchy Fog Then Sunny

Temperatures are climbing slowly for a slightly warmer afternoon today.

Today’s highs will be in the 60s for the coasts and very overcast for northern LA County beaches, with more chance of sun down at Seal Beach to Newport Beach. More inland it will be a few degrees warmer in the mid 70s, upper 70s for the Inland Empire and warm parts of the San Fernando Valley.

Forecasters warn beachgoers to be careful out in the water — strong rip currents and breaking waves up to 6 feet will pound the Malibu coast and LA county beaches until 2 p.m. If you are ever caught in a strong rip current, check out this guide from the National Weather Service.

Temperatures in the deserts will go up to 85 degrees in the high desert, up to 98 degrees for Coachella Valley.

Tonight’s lows will drop to the 50s.

• ‘Turandot’: British-born (but icon of L.A.) artist David Hockney designed the sets for this production of Puccini favorite Turandot two decades ago, and the show returns to L.A. Opera this week at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The L.A. Times digs into the unique history of the set and how it came out of long-time storage for this new revival. Starring Angela Meade in the title role, the opera also features Russell Thomas as her suitor and Guanqun Yu.
